Despite a 10-0 start by the Oakland Raiders, they were unable to contain Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in second quarter en route to a 28-10 loss.
Derek Carr once again had a promising start to the game as he managed to complete a 25-yard pass to Derek Carrier to get into Chiefs territory. Carr then followed that up with a beautiful throw to Tyrell Williams for another 19-yard gain, which allowed Daniel Carlson to boot in the 28-yard field goal.
Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City were unable to answer Oakland’s initial score, as he missed Mecole Hardman on third-and-nine, forcing a punt. With the ball back, Carr launched a deep ball to Ryan Grant who managed to draw a pass interference penalty. Near the goal line, Carr found Williams for a touchdown at the back of the endzone. Carlson converted on the extra point, putting the Raiders up 10-0.
Wasting no time at the top of the second quarter, Mahomes completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson. Harrison Butker converted on the extra point, closing the gap to 10-7. After the Raiders offense stalled on their next drive, the Chiefs went right back to work. Mahomes found Travis Kelce for 15 and eight-yard strikes before ultimately capping off the drive with a 42-yard bomb to Mecole Hardman, putting the Chiefs up 14-10.
Carr and the offense once again struggled to keep the drive alive as they failed to convert on third-and-27, giving Mahomes another possession to work with. The reigning MVP found Damien Williams for a 32-yard pass and immediately followed that up with another 42-yard pass to Robinson. The Chiefs would then score their third touchdown of the day after Mahomes found Kelce streaking to the end zone, giving them a 21-10 lead.
With the game quickly getting out of hand, Oakland’s offense once again failed to find any rhythm, resulting in yet another punt. With the ball back once again, it only took Mahomes one pass to find Robinson for his second touchdown of the day, pushing the Kansas City lead to 28-10 before halftime.
After earning a stop at the beginning of the third quarter, Josh Jacobs broke off a 51-yard run that put the Raiders in scoring position. However, on first-and-goal, Carr was picked off as he was looking for Williams.
The Chiefs ultimately failed to capitalize on the turnover, giving the ball back to the Raiders. Despite this, Carr threw his second interception of the day, costing themselves yet another scoring opportunity.
While the Raiders recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter, they eventually suffered their first loss of the 2019 NFL season.
