Cornerback has been a question mark for the Las Vegas Raiders this entire offseason and the team has done little to address the position. But there are still some veteran options available and one that has been linked to the Raiders is Marcus Peters.

Peters has been one of the best ball-hawking cornerbacks since entering the NFL in 2015 when he won Defensive Rookie of the Year. The three-time All-Pro met with the Raiders a month ago, and while the two sides have yet to agree to a deal, a signing may be imminent.

According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Raiders seem “likely” to sign the veteran to a deal before training camp begins:

Those guys may be competing for one starting job, as the Raiders seem likely to sign veteran cornerback Marcus Peters before training camp. Peters came in for a visit last month and, according to league and team sources, the two sides have stayed in touch as Peters tests the market. The Raiders have other veteran cornerbacks on their list, but Peters could very likely sign with the team that he grew up rooting for as a kid in Oakland.

Peters has long been known for his gambling style at the position. He is a playmaker, to say the least, but sometimes when he misses, it can lead to big plays for the opposition as well. Even still, the Raiders need someone who can create turnovers in the back end of their defense, and throughout most of his career, that is exactly where Peters has thrived.

The veteran has totaled 32 interceptions in his seven NFL seasons with six of those picks being returned for touchdowns. Peters also has 92 passes defensed and 11 forced fumbles in his career. And as Tafur noted, Peters is from Oakland and grew up watching the Raiders so having the chance to play in that silver and black should appeal to him.

The top of the Raiders’ cornerback depth currently features Nate Hobbs, Amik Robertson, Brandon Facyson, David Long Jr. and Duke Shelley who have six interceptions combined in their NFL careers so far. The team didn’t add a corner in the draft until the fourth round with Jakorian Bennett, so questions will remain about the secondary even with the possible addition of Peters.

There is a lot of room for growth within this group, but adding a proven commodity such as Peters would go a long way toward solidifying the position.
