Through their first six games of the season, it is hard to say whether the Oakland Raiders are contenders or pretenders in the AFC West.

The Raiders’ young players have developed quicker than expected and they have gotten over all the Antonio Brown drama that distracted them for almost all of training camp. That has led to some solid wins over teams like the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts.

Oakland has also struggled at times though, most recently against the Green Bay Packers in Week 7, and the result is a mediocre 3-3 record.

Before the Raiders lost to the Packers, it was reported that they were planning to be buyers ahead of next week’s trade deadline. It appears that is no longer the case though as Vic Tafur of The Athletic is reporting that the Raiders have traded Gareon Conley to the Houston Texans for a third-round draft pick:

The move comes as a bit of a surprise considering the Raiders drafted Conley in the first round out of Ohio State just two years ago in 2017. Conley has not been bad this season, recording 23 total tackles, and interception and two passes defensed in six games, but he has not developed into the true No. 1 cornerback that Oakland was hoping he would, and his time in the organization now comes to an end.

With Conley no longer in the mix, the Raiders secondary will not be relying on young cornerbacks like Trayvon Mullen and Isaiah Johnson, when he returns from injury.

It will be interesting to see what the Raiders do from here as they are still in the postseason race but may be better off acquiring more draft picks to continue to build for the future.

Conley won’t have to wait long before facing his former team as the Raiders travel to take on the Texans this Sunday.
