The Oakland Raiders announced on Tuesday that they have signed veteran guard Richie Incognito and released guard Chaz Green. The terms of the contract were not released but it is expected to be a one-year deal.

Incognito sat out the 2018 season after being cut by the Buffalo Bills. The former third-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2005 out of Nebraska has played 11 NFL seasons though, being named a Pro Bowler in four of them. That includes the last three seasons that he played with the Bills from 2015-17.

Most people are familiar with Incognito’s past history in the league as he was suspended for an entire season after a bullying incident with former Miami Dolphins teammates Jonathan Martin.

Incognito has worked to repair his image since then, and the Raiders are currently without a starting left guard so he would likely compete for that position along with Denzelle Good.

He was arrested this past August though after he threatened an employee at a funeral parlor in Scottsdale, Arizona after his father’s death and police later found guns in his car. He could be subject to NFL discipline this season for that arrest.

Throughout the course of the draft process this year, the Raiders emphasized adding high-character players to the organization, so it is a bit interesting that they decided to add Incognito into the mix.

There is no doubt that he has been a talented player throughout the course of his career though, so the Raiders must be hoping that getting him in the locker room with their veterans will help him continue to repair his image and give him one last opportunity to be an NFL player.
