The Oakland Raiders returned to the Oakland Coliseum for a Week 9 matchup against an AFC West divisional opponent in the Denver Broncos. With first place on the line, quarterback Derek Carr and running back Latavius Murray took matters into their own hands and came out victorious.
In their 30-20 victory on Sunday Night Football, the offense proved to be too much for the Broncos, as the front seven was unable to stop Murray. Also, the absence of cornerback Aqib Talib shifted the defensive backs of the Broncos, which Bill Musgrave capitalized on.
Carr was able to take the Raiders down the field on multiple occasions, while the running game tired the front seven. Murray received ample opportunities to make his impact felt, resulting in him being crowned the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.
For the game, Murray took 20 carries and totaled 114 rushing yards, along with three touchdowns. All three of Murray’s touchdowns for the game came from the one-yard line, as multiple penalties caused the Raiders to have great field position.
While averaging 5.8 yards per carry, Murray was able to help in the blocking scheme in order to protect Carr.
The NFL announces weekly winners for the FedEx Air and Ground Players of the Week. For Week 9, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees won alongside Murray. Fans of the NFL get to vote for the winner for each week, with Raider nation coming through strong.
The announced winners also get to contribute to a charitable organization, as FedEx donates $2,000 to the USO through FedEx Cares. The donation is used to help service members connected to their home, family and country as they transition from military life to civilian life.
On the season, Murray has taken 89 carries for 393 yards, with eight touchdowns and zero fumbles.
