NFL Free Agency Rumors: Raiders Sign Defensive End Alex Barrett
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders announced that they have signed defensive end Alex Barrett. The terms of the contract were not released.

Barrett cashes in on a contract with the Raiders after a successful stint with the San Diego Fleet in the American Alliance Football league. The league was recently brought to an end due to money issues, but he had 15 tackles and two sacks in eight games with the Fleet.

Before joining the AAF, Barrett spent the majority of the 2017 and 2018 season on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. He did appear in two games and recorded one tackle.

The Mesa, Ariz. native played four seasons (2013-16) at San Diego State. He played in 50 games and had 19 sacks, which is tied for fourth-most in school history. Barrett also had 170 career tackles and finished seventh on the school’s all-time tackles for loss list with 40.

Oakland ranked dead last by a wide margin in 2018 with just 13 total sacks, so getting a pass rush is a big focus of theirs this offseason. Adding Barrett should help with that, but they will likely turn to the draft as well to get a pass rusher in the first round.
