The Oakland Raiders announced that they have signed tight end Brandon Barnes and waived cornerback Isaiah Langley as a corresponding move.
Barnes originally signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama State in 2017. Barnes has not played much football since then though, spending a short time in the New York Jets organization and then back with the Lions on their practice squad before being out of the league completely in 2018.
In 38 games across four seasons at Alabama State, Barnes had 29 receptions for 436 yards and six touchdowns. He recorded five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown in his final season.
After losing Jared Cook to the New Orleans Saints in free agent, tight end is a position that is currently up in the air for the Raiders. Darren Waller is expected to take over as the starter with rookie Foster Moreau and Derek Carrier backing him up, although if Barnes impresses in training camp in the preseason, it is possible that he carves out a role for himself. A spot on the practice squad is a more likely scenario, however.
The Raiders signed Langley as an undrafted free agent this past offseason, although given the organization’s depth in the secondary, he did not receive much of an opportunity to make the team.
