The Oakland Raiders announced that they have signed linebacker Derrick Moncrief to a reserve/futures contract. He joins a handful of other players signed to similar deals that will get the opportunity to participate in offseason team workouts and get the chance to compete for a roster spot during training camp.
Moncrief began his college career with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs in 2012 and 2013 and then played for the Auburn Tigers in 2014 before finishing with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2015 and 2016.
After going undrafted, Moncrief signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, where he has spent the last three seasons.
In 35 total games with the Roughriders, Moncrief has 126 total tackles, four sacks, five interceptions and a forced fumble. He played in a career-high 17 games in 2019 and had 69 total tackles, all four of his sacks, three interceptions and the forced fumble.
Linebacker is perhaps the one position that the Raiders lack depth the most at, so Moncrief will have a golden opportunity this summer. If he doesn’t make the 53-man roster, then there still possibly could be a spot on the practice squad for him.
The Raiders have a ton of draft picks and cap space this offseason, but it is nice to see they are also making marginal moves to attempt to improve the team as they get set to move to Las Vegas.
