Raiders Rumors: Tyrell Williams Signs With Lions

As part of their efforts to clear up some much-needed cap space, the Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with wide receiver Tyrell Williams this offseason.

The Raiders signed Williams to a four-year, $44.4 million contract that included $22 million guaranteed heading into the 2019 campaign. However, he was never able to develop into the weapon they had hoped for after dealing with his fair share of injuries.

The writing had been on the wall for Williams’ departure once the team had paid off his guaranteed money. It appears it has not taken him very long to find a new home.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams has signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions:

Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Tyrell Williams has reached agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million with the Detroit Lions, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

The Raiders had high expectations for Williams following a promising stint with the Los Angeles Chargers that included a 1,000-yard receiving campaign in 2016. Unfortunately, plantar fasciitis limited him to just 42 receptions for 651 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games in 2019. He then would miss the entire 2020 season with a torn labrum in his shoulder.

The Lions are hoping Williams can prove himself by providing plenty of bang for his buck this time around in the 2021 NFL season. After all, he could be poised to take on an integral role in this receiving corps with Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr. and Danny Amendola all set to become free agents when the new league year starts on March 17.

Detroit made headlines by parting ways with quarterback Matthew Stafford in their blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams. It is safe to say that quarterback Jared Goff is going to need all the help he can get in the midst of another grueling rebuild.
