Raiders Release Veteran Safety Damarious Randall

In a bit of a surprise move, the Las Vegas Raiders announced that they have released veteran safety Damarious Randall.

With NFL rosters needing to get down to 53 players in the coming days, there are expected to be a lot more cuts in the coming days. Randall isn’t the only veteran secondary member they parted ways with after signing them this offseason as they also released cornerback Prince Amukamara.

This signals the start of the youth movement in the Raiders secondary as their two starting cornerbacks will be Trayvon Mullen, who is entering his second season, and rookie first-round pick Damon Arnette. The starting safeties will then be Johnathan Abram, who played just one game in his rookie season, and Erik Harris.

The Raiders also brought in safety Jeff Heath in free agency, so he likely will see a lot of playing time as well.

By releasing Randall now, that gives him the opportunity to latch on somewhere else before the start of the season. He signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $1.5 million contract with Las Vegas this offseason.

The fit in Las Vegas for Randall didn’t seem to be there though as he didn’t get in a lot of reps with the first team during training camp. It didn’t cost the Raiders a whole lot to release him, so they decided to move on before he even played a single game.
