The Oakland Raiders announced that they have signed linebacker Brandon Marshall and waived Justin Phillips after reaching an injury settlement.

The Raiders have dealt with a number of injuries to their linebacking corps, so head coach Jon Gruden made it clear that they were planning on bringing in some reinforcements ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. While those reinforcements didn’t come in the form of a trade, they were able to bring back Marshall.

Marshall spent the last six seasons with the Denver Broncos before signing with the Raiders this past offseason. He was expected to bring a veteran presence and leadership to a young locker room but the outside linebacker was surprisingly released at the end of training camp.

It does not come as much of a surprise that they are bringing him back though considering he knows the system so theoretically could fill in and play as soon as this weekend against the Detroit Lions.

The Raiders defense has struggled in recent weeks, particularly in the fourth quarter of games. Bringing in Marshall may not improve that in a drastic way, but he does provide some fresh legs down the stretch of the season.
