After a tough loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, the Oakland Raiders have their work cut out for them as they go on the road to take on the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

The Raiders looked sluggish on both sides of the field in their loss to the Chiefs as Patrick Mahomes routinely found receivers streaking down field while Derek Carr was unable to find much success through the air. It is clear the team is a work in progress and will likely need more time throughout the year to gel together.

However, Oakland may be getting a jolt in the offense and on special teams as they acquired wide receiver Trevor Davis from the Green Bay Packers. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson outline why they felt the need to make a move to add some speed, via the Raiders official Twitter:

“Yeah, we had a chance to see him, obviously in the preseason on our trip against Green Bay, and we’ve heard a lot of good things about him. We know some people on the staff there, but we also had a chance to watch him on video and we’ve watched him the last couple years. He’s been a core special teams guy for them [Packers], so he helps in a number of different areas, but his speed is probably what really jumped out at us.”

It seems that Davis already has a good idea of where he will be the most effective right away:

“Schemes are much more simplistic when it comes to special teams versus offense. Being able to plug yourself in there [special teams] is a little easier than it would be offensively, so that’s why I would be more so ready to hop in there on special teams and really hopefully both. But at the end of the day you got to be just ready for anything.

“This is right down the street from where I went to college and finished my career, so it’s good to be back.”

Drafted 163th overall in in 2016, Davis has been used sparingly in his four-year career thus far. Used primarily as a return specialist, Davis may also find himself in four-receiver sets with the Raiders as he can challenge opposing defensive backs with his speed.

Oakland’s current return specialist Dwayne Harris briefly exited Week 2 with an ankle injury but managed to return to the game. Acquiring Davis provides some insurance in the return game in the event that Harris misses time with the injury.

While adding a potential weapon like Davis may help, it will take more than that if the Silver and Black hope to upset the Vikings. It will be interesting to see if Oakland can rebound and get back on track.
