The quarterback position continues to be the most talked about aspect of the Las Vegas Raiders as who is under center and their performance will ultimately decide how successful this season is. Everyone has an opinion and that includes Raiders legend and NFL Hall of Famer Tim Brown.
Brown has always been willing to give his honest thoughts on anything having to do with the Raiders, and what they do at quarterback is no exception. And while Brown does understand the team’s need to find a franchise quarterback, he doesn’t want them to give up too much to do so, via Bill Williamson of Silver and Black Pride:
“I don’t want them to give up the farm to get a quarterback, especially such there’s no guarantees about any of them,” Brown said. “If teams start asking for Davante (Adams) or Maxx Crosby, I don’t want that to happen. Then, you start talking about giving up future draft picks. That’s scary, too. They’re in a tough position.”
There has been a lot of talk about the Raiders potentially moving into the top three of the draft to take LSU’s Jayden Daniels, but moving up from No. 13 to No. 3 would be very costly. It is fair to wonder whether it would be worth it, as Brown suggests. It’s a big decision to make, and the front office must carefully weigh all of their options.
As it currently stands, the Raiders have second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell returning and added veteran Gardner Minshew in free agency. Brown would be perfectly fine if the Raiders went into the season letting those two battle it out for the job:
“Minshew seems to be a very capable quarterback and Aidan is going to be a year better,” Brown said. “So, that might be the best way to go if you can’t get it done in the draft.”
Of course, Brown is also a former wide receiver, and so his thoughts will always go towards current star wideout Davante Adams. And Brown believes that the Raiders can not waste these years of Adams with subpar quarterback play:
“They can’t allow Davante to play with guys who are just wearing jerseys and I’m not saying (Minshew and O’Connell) are those guys,” Brown said. “They just need to have a quality player, whoever it is, playing with Davante. You can’t waste that type of talent.”
What the Raiders ultimately do, whether it is moving up in the draft, taking a quarterback at No. 13 or even in the later rounds, the franchise, and Tim Brown, knows that until they find that franchise guy, the ceiling on what the Raiders can accomplish is capped.
Raiders have met with Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. prior to NFL Draft
One potential option in the 2024 NFL Draft for the Las Vegas Raiders is University of Washington star Michael Penix Jr. The franchise has already met with Penix ahead of the upcoming draft, and he has many traits that could make him an ideal fit.
Penix led the nation in passing yards last year on his way to winning the Maxwell Award and finishing second in Heisman Trophy voting while leading the Huskies to the College Football Playoff National Championship. But he also has a significant injury history and is one of the older prospects.
