The Oakland Raiders are currently going through yet another transition period. The storied NFL franchise simply hasn’t been able to get it right over the past few years leading to a revolving door at the quarterback position and plenty of players coming and going every single year.
The one player that has been able to stand the test of time in Oakland has been veteran kicker Sebastian Janikowski and now it appears the team has locked him up for the long-term. Janikowski signed a five-year contract extension on Friday according to Marc Sessler of NFL.com:
Sebastian Janikowski on Friday signed a new five-year contract with the franchise that picked him 17th overall in the 2000 NFL Draft, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported, per a source involved in the negotiations. The team later announced the move.
At 35, Janikowski’s new deal with the team will have him reaching the ripe old age of 40 before becoming a free agent or deciding to call it quits in a Raiders uniform.
In the 2000 NFL Draft, the Raiders took a gamble on a Janikowski selecting him with the 17th pick in the first round. Although it was a gamble and the team took a fair amount of criticism for the move, Janikowski has been able to stand the test of time while being one of the most consistent kickers in the NFL.
