Aside from dropping their second straight game in Week 8, the Oakland Raiders were dealt a significant blow after center Rodney Hudson was carted off the field with an ankle injury.

It was the first time in the 2019 NFL season that the Raiders had their full, starting offensive line healthy. Unfortunately, it lasted only 10 plays before Hudson suffered the injury.

Although there was initially some concern, head coach Jon Gruden has been optimistic about his status after X-rays came back negative. Regardless, it still remains to be seen if the veteran will be back in time for their Week 9 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Gruden confirmed that both centers, Hudson and Andre James, are dealing with high ankle sprains and has not ruled Hudson out just yet, via Vic Tafur of The Athletic:

It is encouraging to see Gruden’s comments indicate that there is some hope Hudson will be able to suit up. Even if he is unable to go this week, it appears that the injury is not deemed to be too severe and he is not expected to miss an extended period of time.

Although Oakland has seemingly managed to dodge a bullet this time around, they may want to take a cautious approach to ensure that Hudson does not further aggravate the injury. The offensive line has managed to pick up its play in recent weeks and the last thing this group needs is another prolonged setback.

Unfortunately, it appears they may not have the luxury of being patient with Hudson’s recovery since James also dealing with the same injury. The former undrafted free agent played left tackle in college, however, he was able to do a solid job filling in at center in Week 8.

The prospect of Hudson being able to make his return this week undoubtedly provides a huge boost upfront as Oakland looks to get their offensive line on the same page for the second half of the season. Regardless, they will still need to come up with a contingency plan to fill the void just in case he and James are both sidelined.

The Raiders are starting to lose momentum from their surprising 3-2 start to the season after dropping two straight. Fortunately, the worst part of their travel schedule is now behind them and they can try full advantage of their upcoming three-game homestand.
