The Oakland Raiders announced that rookie running back Josh Jacobs woke up with discomfort in his leg on Wednesday and was evaluated and treated for a superficial skin infection.

Jacobs took to social media to reveal that he underwent the surgery late Wednesday night, causing concern among the fan base considering he has been dealing with a shoulder issue in recent weeks. He later clarified that the surgery was on his leg though, which allowed fans to exhale a bit.

The leading NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate missed the Raiders’ Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to the shoulder injury, although the hope was that he would be able to return for the season finale against the Denver Broncos this Sunday. The Raiders still have an outside chance at making the postseason and certainly could use a strong game from their workhorse running back against a Broncos team that has been playing a lot better in recent weeks.

It is unclear if this leg surgery or the shoulder issue will force Jacobs to miss the game. His status will continue to be monitored throughout the week and he will likely be a game-time decision going into Sunday.

The Raiders can take solace in the fact that they have a capable backup in DeAndre Washington if Jacobs is forced to miss the game. Washington saw his role expand in Week 16 with Jacobs out and rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, also adding a pair of receptions for 21 yards.

Knowing how tough Jacobs is though, he will likely do everything possible to ensure he is healthy enough to play in Week 17.
