The Oakland Raiders announced on Sunday that they have waived defensive end Josh Mauro to make room on the 53-man roster for quarterback DeShone Kizer after he was claimed off waivers from the Green Bay Packers.
The Kizer move came as a bit of a surprise considering the Raiders already decided to keep both Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman on their roster. It now appears that they will head into the regular season with four signal-callers with the addition of Kizer.
Kizer is a former second-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2017 out of Notre Dame so it makes sense why Raiders head coach Jon Gruden sees some promise.
In 18 career games (15 starts) across his two seasons with the Browns and Packers, the 23-year-old has completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 3,081 yards. Turnovers have been an issue though as he only has 11 touchdown passes compared to 24 interceptions.
The Raiders signed Mauro in March to give them some defensive line depth and despite a solid preseason showing, he did not make the final cut.
Mauro originally went undrafted in 2013 out of Stanford. He has spent time in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants organizations before joining the Raiders and shouldn’t have a hard time finding a new team after being released or perhaps could even wind up back in Oakland.
The Raiders’ 53-man roster now appears to be set heading into their season opener next Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
