The Las Vegas Raiders announced that they have officially signed free agents Justin Phillips and Sam Young, in addition to undrafted free agent Kamaal Seymour. This comes as the second wave of free-agent signings after the team signed four undrafted free agents on Tuesday.
For Phillips, this is more of a re-signing as the linebacker joined the Raiders practice squad last season after initially being signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.
Last season, Phillips was eventually called up to join the active roster but saw some very limited action across four games, playing in less than 100 snaps between the defense and special teams. He was able to total seven tackles in his first professional campaign.
Moving down the list, the Raiders will be Young’s sixth team across his 11-year career. Young has primarily been a backup right tackle, recently spending three years with the Miami Dolphins. Last season he appeared in four games for the San Francisco 49ers.
Young spent four years at Notre Dame as a starter on the offensive line. He started 40 games at left tackle and just 10 on the right side, meaning he should be able to slide around the line if need be.
Lastly, Seymour joins the team as another right tackle after going undrafted and spending four years with Rutgers University, appearing in 46 games during his collegiate career.
Seymour spent his first two years at Rutgers as part of the defensive line, totaling only one tackle. Although he likely will not see the defensive side of the ball as a pro, having that knowledge could help him on the Raiders’ offensive line.
Although the Raiders have brought in a variety of offensive lineman this offseason, their starting group should be secure. With the likes of Trent Brown and Kolton Miller, opposing defenses should have a hard time getting to quarterback Derek Carr.
