While the Oakland Raiders are busy making blockbuster moves this offseason, it appears to have led to the release of both Jordy Nelson and AJ McCarron.
Oakland made headlines with the acquisition of Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Of course, something had to give in order for them to clear the books to make way for Brown’s new contract.
The Raiders still have some serious revamping to do if they hope to be competitive in the 2019 NFL season. As a result, it seems they are making a few more cuts to make room on the roster.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Oakland has released Jordy Nelson:
And now the Raiders have released WR Jordy Nelson, per source.
Schefter added that the Raiders also parted ways with AJ McCarron:
Raiders released QB AJ McCarron, per source.
Nelson joined the Raiders as a bit of a surprise addition last offseason when he parted ways with the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, he is coming off a down year after finishing the 2018 season with 63 receptions for 739 yards and three touchdowns.
Nelson had initially signed a two-year deal in Oakland, but it appears the 33-year-old is set to test the waters of free agency once again. Although Packers fans would likely love to have him back, they have a few other veterans they may need to reconsider signing first.
Meanwhile, McCarron was never really given a chance to make much of an impact as the backup after appearing in only two games to complete one pass for eight yards all season. Regardless, his release will help save the Raiders almost $5 million in cap space while subsequently moving Nathan Peterman to the backup spot.
