The Oakland Raiders announced that they have signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Mike Glennon to a one-year contract. He is expected to be the team’s primary backup to Derek Carr in 2019 after A.J. McCarron was recently released and signed with the Houston Texans.
Glennon was a former third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013 out of North Carolina State, and this will mark his fourth team in four years after signing with the Bears in 2017 and Cardinals in 2018.
Serving as the backup to Josh Rosen, Glennon only appeared in two games for the Cardinals last season. He completed 15 of his 21 pass attempts for 174 yards and a touchdown. He started four games for the Bears the season before that and completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 833 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
Overall in 27 career games (22 starts), Glennon has a completion percentage of 60.9 with 35 touchdowns compared to 20 interceptions.
Glennon’s NFL experience makes him one of the best backups in the league who is more-than-capable of stepping in if Carr were to get injured.
The Raiders have mentioned as one of the teams interested in drafting Kyler Murray this year, but with Carr and Glennon already in their quarterback room, it would make a lot more sense to spend their three first-round draft picks to upgrade at other positions on the roster.
