The Las Vegas Raiders are making significant changes to their defense by signing Darnay Holmes, a former cornerback for the New York Giants. This move comes as part of the Raiders’ ongoing efforts to strengthen their roster, especially on the defensive side of the field. Darnay Holmes had an impressive showing during the 2024 preseason, where he made key contributions, including five tackles against the New York Jets. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Holmes brings valuable experience from his time under Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who previously worked with him in New York. As the team continues to reshuffle its lineup, this addition could be an essential step in improving their defensive performance this season.

Holmes’ Impressive Career Overview

Darnay Holmes has shown his potential throughout his career, making a strong entrance into the NFL during his rookie season. In 2020, he played in 12 games, earning five starts. Over those games, he tallied an impressive 30 tackles, defended five passes, and even recorded an interception alongside a fumble recovery and half a sack. The following years saw him build on this foundation, making four starts in 11 games during his second season and participating in all 15 games in his third year but starting just twice. In total, Holmes has accumulated noteworthy numbers: 107 tackles, 18 passes defended, four interceptions, and three tackles for loss, accompanied by two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Notably, last year, he played in a career-high 16 games, securing two interceptions and a forced fumble despite having a reduced role with only 123 defensive snaps.

Before joining the NFL, Holmes spent three seasons at UCLA, where he was recognized as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention in his final year after making 33 starts in 35 games. With the Raiders’ recent decision to waive rookie cornerback M.J. Devonshire, Holmes’ veteran presence will be crucial for adding depth to their secondary. This addition reflects the Raiders’ ongoing strategy to improve their roster, potentially impacting the Las Vegas Raiders odds for the upcoming season. Holmes’ experience and skill set will likely play an essential role in the team’s defensive strategies.

A Strategic Boost to Their Defense

The signing of Darnay Holmes marks a strategic move for the Las Vegas Raiders as they aim to reinforce their defensive lineup. With his proven track record and familiarity with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Holmes is well-positioned to make a significant impact. As the Raiders look to enhance their performance this season, Holmes’ addition offers depth and experience, which could be key to their success on the field.
