The Oakland Raiders transformed their roster over the offseason, bringing in dozens of new players ahead of head coach Jon Gruden’s return to the Oakland Coliseum sidelines.
The organization was not shy to cut bait with fan favorites and notable veterans, releasing the likes of Michael Crabtree and Marquette King. The moves freed up cap space to which Gruden used to fill the voids with players of his choosing.
King, who enjoyed a solid seven-year stint with the Raiders, wound up catching on with the rival Denver Broncos. As the two teams are set to face off on Sunday, the 29-year-old refused to acknowledge Gruden in a question that was directed to him, according to Mike Klis of 9 News:
King is now punting for the Broncos and will get a chance to show his stuff Sunday against Gruden.
“Who’s that?’’ King said. “I don’t know who you’re talking about.’’
King was understandably disappointed with the Raiders’ decision to suddenly release him. He expressed such feelings in multiple tweets over the offseason.
King’s personality reportedly did not mesh well with Gruden, which was a deciding factor in the team’s decision to part ways during the start of the free agency period.
The Raiders replaced King with Johnny Townsend, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He made his debut on Monday against the Los Angeles Rams, accumulating four punts that traveled a combined 178 yards.
