Upon the conclusion of the 31-1 vote in favor of the Las Vegas relocation, Mark Davis and the Oakland Raiders unveiled a three-year timeline before the completion of the Las Vegas Stadium. However, the construction portion does sometimes bring up factors that halt the process.
In order to receive approval on a lease, you must first get full membership. The National Football League has four meetings a year to obtain this full membership. The meetings are conducted in March, May, October and December, meaning months separation should you not receive approval at one.
Raiders president Marc Badain was able to address the formality of the situation, with the stadium contingent on these deadlines. If the Raiders are unable to secure the full membership by the May deadline, they would have to wait until October and possible postpone the completion, via Jared Dubin of CBSSports.com:
While the Raiders’ proposed timeline has the team making a move from Oakland to Las Vegas in time for the 2020 season, there is now a “distinct possibility” the move could be delayed until 2021. Raiders president Marc Badain said this week that if the Raiders and the stadium authority board in Las Vegas do not come to an agreement on a lease at the owners meetings later this month (May 22), they would likely have to delay the move another year.
The circumstance would provide yet another gap year for the Raiders, with their lease at the Oakland Coliseum finishing after the 2018 season. The 2019 season remains in the air, in regards to location and where the team will play.
Representatives from the Oakland Coliseum have already stated they don’t want the team to return for the 2019 season, stating that the Raiders are actually costing them money. Davis is open to the idea of returning to the Oakland Coliseum, but the two sides have reached an impasse.
The proposed lease for the Las Vegas Stadium is expected to be a lengthy one, covering expenses throughout the stadium for upwards of 30 years. The Raiders have a little under two weeks to receive this key approval, or else it could officially push back their relocation another full season.
